Assistant Professor in Electronic Power Grid (2022-224-04777)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, AAU Energy, a position as Assistant Professor in Electronic Power Grid is open for appointment from 1st January 2023 – 31st December 2025 or soon after. AAU Energy has campuses in both Aalborg and Esbjerg, this position is in Aalborg.  The mission is to be world leading in both research and research-based education of the energy engineers of the future. AAU Energy has approx. 300 employees of many nationalities, of which 25 are administrative staff. In addition, AAU Energy constantly has approx. 50-70 guest researchers from around the world.  Research and teaching are in the absolute world elite in the field of energy, and we have extensive and leading workshop and laboratory facilities, where research and innovation are carried out in direct collaboration with industry to a great extent. The position is offered in relation to the research program Electronic Power Grid (eGRID) and the assistant professor will be positioned to the Section for Power Electronics System Integration and Materials. Job description

Research areas will be within system interactions of power electronics for large-scale renewable energy systems and power-to-x applications, with a particular focus on modeling, stability, and control of power-electronics-based power system, grid-forming inverter technology, stability robustness analysis and enhancement approaches for power electronics systems.

Applicants should be highly motivated with the industrial project experiences in modeling and control of power electronic systems. The following working experiences are required:

1) Small-signal modeling and integration of power electronics-based renewable energy systems, e.g., offshore wind power plants, solar power plants and power-to-X applications.
2) Stability and interaction analysis of renewable energy power plants with grid-following and grid-forming operation modes.
3) Design-oriented analysis of grid-forming control in different grid and power plants scenarios.
4) Robust control design for grid-connected converters in electronic power grid.

A high proficiency in oral and written English is required. The applications for enrolment must include the following:

Teaching will primarily be in power electronics, modeling and control for voltage source converters, grid-forming converters, stability and control in power electronic based power systems, but also in other study programs at the University.

Qualification requirements:

Appointment as an Assistant Professor presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment.

Appointment as an Assistant Professor cannot exceed a period of four years in total in a temporary position (appointment at Assistant Professor level cannot exceed a period of eight years in total in Denmark).

Shortlisting will be applied. After the review of any objections regarding the assessment committee, the head of department, with assistance from the chair of the assessment committee, selects the candidates to be assessed. Employment is in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities (the Appointment Order) and the Ministry of Finance's current Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities. Employment and salary are in accordance with the collective agreement for state-employed academics.
