At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of the Built Environment at Aalborg University’s campus in Copenhagen a part-time (20%) position as Associate Professor in energy-efficient HVAC systems in buildings is open for appointment from 1. October 2022 or soon hereafter. The Department of the Built Environment focuses on the technical and scientific disciplines within the built environment. Research areas span from Indoor Environment and Energy Efficient buildings, Wind Turbines, Structural Design, Structural Materials, Geotechnical Engineering, Wave Energy to Traffic along with many other areas. The research is conducted in a national as well as an international research environment. The department takes on contract research for both public institutions and private companies. The research projects involve both theoretical research and in situ measurements along with laboratory experiments. As an employee at the Department of the Built Environment, you become a part of an international research environment, where focus is on innovation, knowledge sharing and interdisciplinary collaborations. 

Job description

The work will mainly be focused on developing technical solutions for energy-efficient HVAC systems in buildings. The candidate will be required to contribute to further development of the department’s expertise in technical solutions for HVAC systems, and air distribution systems, both theoretically and through experimental demonstrations. The candidate should have knowledge and expertise in HVAC systems and indoor climate requirements. The candidate should take a leading role to develop innovative technical solutions, which facilitate the evolution of current buildings towards smart buildings. The candidate should contribute to generation of new projects within the department’s application domain. The position will involve teaching duties and supervision of master and/or PhD students.

Qualification requirements: 

Build is looking for an Associate professor with a background in Mechanical Engineering theory and its application in HVAC systems who

  • hold a PhD degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering
  • has at least 10 years’ research experience within HVAC systems, air distribution systems and indoor climate requirements
  • has hands-on experience in field/laboratory measurements within HVAC systems applications
  • has data analysis and data-driven control skills
  • has experience within Smart Grid and demand response programs
  • has solid experience in writing project proposal for national and international funds, in the fields of HVAC systems, Smart Grid, hospital ventilation etc.
  • has teaching experience within the field of building engineering systems
  • has experience in renewable energy technologies, such as solar energy, heat pumps and energy storing, would be considered as important assets.

As a person, the candidate should be driven with the ability to work in a team as well as independently and be good at networking. The candidate must have professional skills in English (written and spoken) language. Knowing of Danish language at intermediate level is an advantage.

The level of qualification for Associate Professors shall correspond to the level, which can be achieved on the basis of the appointment as Assistant Professor, but may be achievable in other ways. The appointment presupposes that the applicant can demonstrate original scientific production at an international level as well as documented teaching qualifications. Appointment to the position requires that both research and teaching qualifications are at the requested level. The two qualifications will be given equal and principal priority in the overall assessment.

  • Teaching qualifications described in the teaching portfolio.  If this is not enclosed the applicant must include an explanation for its absence.
  • Dissemination qualifications, including participation on committees or boards, participation in organisations and the like.
  • Additional qualifications in relation to the position.
  • References/recommendations.
  • Personal data.

Employment is in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities (the Appointment Order) and the Ministry of Finance's current Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities. Employment and salary are in accordance with the collective agreement for state-employed academics.
