One or more PhD Stipends in Radio Concepts for extended reality (XR) applications in 6G (8-22064)

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, a PhD stipend in Radio Concepts for extended reality (XR) applications in 6G is available within the general study programme Wireless Communications. The stipend is open for appointment from October 1, 2022, or soon as possible thereafter. In electronics engineering, Aalborg University is known worldwide for its high academic quality and the societal relevance of its research programmes. The Department of Electronic Systems consists of more than 200 employees, of which about 40 % are international and about 90 are enrolled PhD students. The Department hosts 620 students. The Department's excellent research infrastructures and facilities accentuate its global position in teaching and research. The Department's research centres around communication, antennas, control systems, AI, sound, cyber security and robotics. The Department plays an active role in translating discoveries and results into practical applications with industrial partners and IPR. The Department provides teaching for several BSc and MSc programmes using a problem- and project-based learning model.

Job description

Future 6th Generation (6G) radio systems are expected to bridge the gap between digital and physical worlds by supporting services such as holographic presence, extreme extended reality (XR) with tactile feedback and high accuracy sensing.  It is envisioned that 6G will consist of a set of specialized subnetworks, where one of them is likely to be a “6G tethered network” specialized to enable XR. This tethered network will provide a localized versatile wireless connection between devices such as a primary 5G-Advanced/6G connected device, most likely an evolved smart phone, and several supporting XR devices, for example augmented reality (AR) glasses, haptic feedback gloves, wirelessly connected headphones, etc.

As these applications set extreme communication service requirements, such as multi-Gbps data rates and <10 ms latencies, it is required to develop new management and orchestration technologies optimizing for low power consumption, while still meeting the XR performance requirements. Members of such network can be fully or partially tethered to the main device and there can also be multiple main devices load balancing the data. The network must also be capable of adapting to the different XR components and distribute communication resources to relevant devices in a power-efficient way.

This study will focus on the air interface design and procedures for this new XR subnetwork and may include:

  • Procedures for how a 6G XR subnetwork access point may proactively sense and manage its subnetwork devices, e.g., before service violations occur due to changes in the wireless channel, interference or even jammers.
  • Radio spectrum sharing techniques across multiple technologies such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc.
  • Procedures for power efficient traffic and processing distribution as well as management of those.

The study will use a combination of analytical and simulation methods. The study may explore candidate solutions based on heuristic algorithms/protocols design as well as machine learning based solutions.

A candidate for this PhD study should have the following qualifications:

  • M.Sc. candidate with a degree in wireless communications or similar
  • mathematical and analytical skills
  • experience in programming, at least in C++, Python or Matlab
  • creative mindset and curiosity to research and develop new solutions in an international environment with highly skilled colleagues

The study will be conducted in close collaboration with Nokia Bell Labs, managed by their site in Aalborg and in cooperation with several of their research teams worldwide.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.

Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.
