Post doc in Earth System Data Assimilation

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Planning, Copenhagen, a fixed-term 2,5 years position as Postdoc in Earth System Data Assimilation is open for appointment from 1 January 2023 or soon hereafter. The research at the Department of Planning reaches from the social science aspects of development (technological, environmental, international and administrative aspects) to physical planning, sector planning, land management, and to technical subjects such as surveying and mapping. Job description

The Post doc position is funded within the research project DANSk-LSM (Developing efficient multi-sensor Data Assimilation frameworks for integrating Earth ObservatioN Satellite data into Land Surface Models) that is supported by the Intendent Research Fund Denmark (DFF). The main goal of this project is to understand the global water cycle through satellite data assimilation. 

Your task is to setup and run various Land Surface Models (LSMs) and coupled atmosphere-LSMs. You will also support a PhD student and other project members to prepare satellite data, downscale them, and generate uncertainty fields. The satellite data you will work with include: Terrestrial Water Storage from GRACE and GRACE-FO; soil moisture remote sensing; and MOIDS and Sentinel derived Land Surface Temperature.

The position is located in the Geodesy group which is based in both Aalborg and Copenhagen, and this position is based in Aalborg.

Profile: The ideal candidate for the position has:

  • PhD degree in one the disciplines such as Geodesy, Physics and Meteorology, Hydrology, Computational Physics, Meteorology, Computer, Civil Engineering, Mathematics, or comparable
  • Profound skills in numerical modelling and programming are essential
  • Experience with hydrological and/or land surface models is necessary
  • Experience with processing of remote sensing products is desirable
  • Strong interest in collaborative work
  • Strong technical and organisational skills
  • Passionate to present the results in highly-ranked peer reviewed science journals and at international conferences
  • Good English skills (oral and written) are required.

Qualification requirements: 

Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.
