2022-224-05005 Postdoc in microbial ecology of wastewater treatment and resource recovery processes

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, a position as postdoc in microbial ecology of wastewater treatment and resource recovery processes is open for appointment from 01.03.2023 or soon hereafter. The position is for 3 years. The position is located within the Environmental Microbiology research group with primary working place in Aalborg, Denmark.

Job description

The postdoc position is part of joint ongoing research on microbial ecology and ecophysiology of microorganisms involved in wastewater treatment and resource recovery processes. The two participating research groups at Aalborg University and TUDelft are working on treatment and recovery processes of wastewater and waste such as biological removal of phosphate, reduction of greenhouse gas emission, production of biopolymers and other relevant processes. We are now looking for a motivated and independent postdoc to pursue, define and work on research questions within this scope.

The postdoc will be part of the research teams at the Center for Microbial Communities at AAU and Environmental Biotechnology at TUDelft. The two groups have state of the art equipment within DNA sequencing (Illumina and Oxford Nanopore), laboratory automation, compute resources, proteomics, metabolomics and advanced microscopy. Extended collaboration and stays with the other partner are expected.

We seek a scientist with strong and documented background within microbial ecology, e.g., through the use of omics, statistics and advanced microscopy. Excellent oral and written English language skills are a requirement. Limited teaching can be expected at the Universities.

The application must contain a brief project description (max. 2 pages) that describes your idea for a project within the scope of microbial ecology and ecophysiology of microorganisms involved in wastewater treatment and resource recovery processes.

All interested candidates are encouraged to apply, regardless of their personal background. We value diversity and see it as a strength.

You may obtain further information about the project from Professor Per Halkjær Nielsen (e-mail: and Professor Mark van Loosdrecht (email:

The Department of Chemistry and Bioscience provides cutting-edge research and teaching in biotechnology, biology, environmental science, chemistry and chemical engineering. The research solves important topics for the benefit of society, and through research-based teaching, we educate independent, collaborative and solution-oriented bachelors, graduates and PhDs.

The Environmental Biotechnology section aims to contribute to technological innovations and process development by conducting fundamental research on microbial ecology to uncover competitive strategies and interspecies dependencies in microbial ecosystems. Research in the Environmental Biotechnology section is based on microbial enrichment culturing and integration of quantitative physiology with molecular techniques (genomics, proteomics, metabolomics) and modelling approaches.
