The Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, Faculty of Engineering and Science, Aalborg University invites applications for one tenure-track assistant professor in materials chemistry. The position is open from 1 August 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter. Place of the position is in Section of Chemical Science and Engineering with workplace in Aalborg, Denmark.

Job description

Materials chemistry is a new and highly interdisciplinary science that involves the use of chemistry for the creation, characterization, and application of materials with interesting or potentially useful physical or chemical characteristics. Substances of interest include inorganic, organic, polymeric, and hybrid materials, and thus materials chemistry incorporates solid-state chemistry, nanoscience, and polymer chemistry.

At the Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, our research and teaching portfolio is aligned with the sustainability goals of our Faculty of Engineering and Science (Engineering areas of sustainability) and the “Knowledge for the World” strategy of Aalborg University (AAU's strategy). We have a strong focus and world leading research environments within disordered materials, topics such as glasses, metal-organic framework (MOF) materials and ceramics, as well as applied research in functionalization of polymers and composites. Our research deals with the fundamental understanding and innovation of new materials and technologies with application areas related to energy storage, energy savings, energy generation, environmental protection through molecular separation and degradation, materials reuse and recovery, electrochemical applications, biosensors and more. We are looking for top level applicants with documented research experience within materials chemistry and documented interest in modern university teaching. Fundamental research of potential future relevance and line of sight to the sustainability goals of the faculty are considered equally important to a demonstrated applied research approach. The position will primarily comprise theoretical and empirical research within one or several topics in materials chemistry, including contributions to collaborative and interdisciplinary work, obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication and research-based teaching including supervision of student project work, which is an integrated part of the AAU Problem Based Learning (PBL) approach to teaching students. Depending on the chosen candidate the position may also include other duties, like public sector advisory work.

Department of Chemistry and Bioscience offer highly qualified candidates an attractive career path via tenure-track. Tenure-track assistant professors are appointed for a period of six years with the prospect of performance-based promotion to a tenured position as Associate Professor. Tenure-track assistant professors are expected to have international academic standing, demonstrating acclaimed competitive research, and/or have a recognized high potential for future impact. The candidate is expected to develop an independent academic profile in collaboration and complimentary to existing research groups and areas of the department.

Further information on the Department is found on Department of Chemistry and Bioscience ( Inquiries about the position can be made to Head of Section Jens Muff, tel. (+45) 9940 3564, or Head of Department Michael Toft Overgaard, tel. (+45) 2446 3066,

Qualification requirements:

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their research visions and ideas, level of documented, internationally competitive research and their ability and plans to attract external funding together with outreach qualifications. Teaching qualifications should be documented and teaching experience are also taken into account in evaluating the candidates. Hands-on experience with PBL learning is an advantage.

In tenure-track employment, AAU attaches particular importance to:

  • The candidate has a PhD degree or equivalent qualification
  • The candidate can demonstrate a high degree of autonomy in their previous education and employment path
  • The candidate shows considerable potential and is among the best in their field
  • The candidate has academic experience from several universities and/or research institutions and preferably international experience
  • The candidate is a skilled communicator
  • The candidate writes and speaks English at the academic level
  • The candidate is expected to meet the criteria for permanent employment at AAU at the end of the tenure-track process

If appointed on tenure-track, the tenure-track assistant professors will have an annual interview with the Head of Department. An internal assessment committee will conduct a mid-term evaluation after 3 years, and an external assessment committee will conduct a final review after 5.5 years. If the final review is positive, the candidate will be offered a tenured position as Associate Professor. The assessment is based on the level of progress shown by the candidate in relation to the tenure-track plan and an overall assessment on the level at which the candidate fulfills the merits within research, teaching, funding and collaboration and research leadership as expected of an associate professor.

The application must contain the following:

  • A statement outlining your reasons for applying, and intentions and visions with the position (cover letter).
  • A Research Plan presenting your research vision, mission and potential actions
  • Your Curriculum Vitae, including personal data, educational background, scientific qualifications, dissemination skills, participation in committees and boards, and additional qualifications relevant for the position.
  • Copies of relevant diplomas (Master of Science and PhD). On request you could be asked for an official English translation.
  • A complete list of publications.
  • Publications you wish to be considered by the assessment committee. You may attach up to 5 publications.
  • A specification of your teaching qualifications relative to the teaching portfolio. If this is not enclosed you must include an explanation for its absence.
  • References/recommendations.

Shortlisting will be applied.
