The Department of Culture and Global Studies invites applications for a temporary position as Professor of Popular Visual Culture with the specific responsibilities to head, guide and further develop the English Programme’s research activities related to popular visual culture. The professorship is a four-year position, starting 1 February 2019, or as soon as possible after this date.

Job description

The Department of Culture and Global Studies invites applications for a temporary position as Professor of Popular Visual Culture with the specific responsibilities to head, guide and further develop the English Programme’s research activities related to popular visual culture. The professorship is a four-year position, starting 1 February 2019, or as soon as possible after this date.

The applicant is expected to have research qualifications at the doctoral level within popular visual culture, and in particular, internationally recognized research experience in the following fields:

  • 21st century American cinema
  • Popular film genres
  • Visual culture and popular culture

The position as Professor with specific responsibilities is temporary with a focus on specific projects as well as ordinary professorship duties. These specific duties will include:

  • Writing one major research monograph on 21st century popular visual culture
    •      Organizing at least one international conference on popular visual culture
    •      Submitting at least one research funding application to strengthen the position of visual culture and media studies at Aalborg University
    •      Developing a curriculum in visual culture in the English program, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels 

Teaching will be within visual culture, media studies, and American studies in the English Programme, but may also be conducted in other study programmes in the Department.

The Professor will be required to participate as a full member of the research group Interdisciplinær Medieforskning  (Interdisciplinary Media Research) , where he/she will engage in the continuous development of the field of research together with the other group members.

In terms of personal qualities, the applicant is expected to have strong interpersonal skills, and to be able to establish and maintain good relations with researchers and students in an environment characterised by cultural diversity.

Regular attendance at the Department is required. In addition, the new employee must be prepared to participate actively in all aspects of the day-to-day activities of the Department, school and research group. Professor with specific responsibilities
Appointment to Professor with specific responsibilities is a temporary position with focus on specific projects as well as ordinary professorship duties. The specific projects may take from three to 8 years. The position will normally be established for the purpose of appointing particularly talented researchers with the ability to develop a promising academic field at an international level.

After expiry of the period the employee exceeds to a position as Assosiate Professor.

Applicants to the professorship are required to provide documentation of a substantial amount of original scientific production at international level, and documentation of significant contribution to the development of the research area in question. It is equally important that applicants are able to undertake research management or other kinds of management, pedagogical counselling and supervision as well as academic assessment tasks.

  • Complete publication list, marking the attached publications, to be taken into consideration in connection with the assessment. A maximum of ten publications may be attached.
  • In case the applicant attaches publications elaborated in collaboration with co-authors, a co-author statement must be enclosed, specifying the applicant's contribution to the joint work. The co-author statement must be signed by at least one of the co-authors Template

All candidates will be assessed by an assessment committee. Applicants may subsequently be summoned to an interview and/or trial lecture.

Agreement
