At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Energy Technology, a position as a Postdoc in Emerging Applications of Wide Bandgap Power Electronic Systems is open for appointment from March 1, 2018, or soon hereafter. The position is available for a period of 18 month. The Department of Energy Technology is an expanding department covering most fields of Energy Technology ranging from electrical energy (Power Systems, Power Electronics, and Electrical Machines) to thermal energy including Energy Systems and Fluid Mechanics and Combustion but also mechatronic systems. The department has about 250 employees – out of them are more than 100 Ph.D. students. The laboratory-facilities are world-class and the research carried out are most often in collaboration with industry. The position is related to the research program of Efficient and Reliable Power Electronics and the postdoc research fellow will be positioned to the section for Power Electronic Systems.

Job description

The overall goal of this project is to develop new methods for ensuring efficient and reliable operations of power electronic systems. Emerging technologies, such as power electronic systems based on new generation of wide bandgap (WBG) power devices, e.g., GaN and SiC, will be focused. The high switching frequency operation of WBG devices enables a fast dynamic performance of power converters, which promotes a variety of emerging applications, such as high-frequency harmonic filtering and resonance mitigation, high-bandwidth power conversion in renewable energy generation. Yet on the other hand, it brings great challenges in practice, such as more electromagnetic interference (EMI) emission. Innovative approaches will be pursued to enable the adoption of WBG power electronics in future power conversion systems.

Research areas for this Postdoc position will be within WBG based power electronic systems. Experience in modeling, control, and design of WBG based power converters considering EMI, controller bandwidth, harmonic filtering, resonance damping, and hardware prototyping are of high interests. More specifically, a successful applicant should document strong ability in most of the listed topics:

•    Innovative EMI modeling, filter design, and integration.
•    High-bandwidth noise-immunity controller design and implementation.
•    High-frequency harmonic filtering based on WBG power converters.
•    High-frequency resonance mitigation within WBG power electronic systems.
•    Hardware prototyping and validation of WBG power converters.
•    Knowledge of PWM techniques, harmonic analysis, current control, resonance damping, and circuit layout.
•    Familiar with MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, Altium Designer, and SolidWorks.
•    Outreach and dissemination.

The research environment will be very international oriented. Proficiency in English and strong teamwork spirit are required.

Qualification requirements
Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.
