One or more PhD stipend(s) in Evolutionary Genetics and Molecular Ecology (18-18057)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience one or more PhD stipends are available within the PhD programme Biotechnology, Chemistry and Environmental Engineering. The stipend(s) is open for appointment from 1 September 2018 or soon thereafter. It is also possible to apply for an integrated PhD stipend. The integrated PhD stipend(s) is open for appointment only starting 1 September 2018. The Department of Chemistry and Bioscience consists of five sections of which three are situated in Aalborg with research and teaching in Biology & Environmental Science, Biotechnology, and Applied Chemistry, one in Copenhagen on Sustainable Biotechnology and one in Esbjerg on Chemical Engineering. The PhD position is located within the section of Biology and Environmental Science with working place in Aalborg.

Job description

The PhD student will be part of a small group of researchers and students working with environmental stress and adaptation research. We have a lively lab where model species such as fruit flies and collembolan are used as model species.

In this project the ideas include to test findings from Drosophila laboratory studies on thermal adaptation in the field and across a range of non-model invertebrate species from ecosystems differing in temperature means and variability. We aim to functionally validate stress resistance candidate genes obtained from laboratory studies, in the field, using gene knock down systems in D. melanogaster, and investigate plasticity and the importance of candidate genes in non-model invertebrate species from Denmark, and from latitudes expected to be even more impacted by climate change, namely arctic and tropical regions. By doing this we aim to tackle pressing questions in ecophysiology and evolutionary biology such as: are genes and molecular mechanisms detected from laboratory studies on model species relevant for adaptation in the field across invertebrate species, and do species from temperate, arctic and tropical regions have similar or distinct ways and abilities of responding to environmental change?

We seek a candidate with a strong interest in evolutionary biology, physiology and/or molecular ecology. The PhD student will work within the topics outlined above, but the project can be tailored to the expertise and interests of the candidate.

The PhD student is expected to engage in some teaching within the area and will follow courses according to the university’s PhD programme.

You may obtain further information from Professor Torsten Nygaard Kristensen, e-mail: and Associate Professor Simon Bahrndorff, e-mail: concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend.

Based on whether the successful applicant already holds a Master’s degree he/she will either receive a regular PhD stipend (3 years) or an Integrated PhD stipend (4 years).

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree.
Integrated PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who has not yet completed a Master’s degree and who wish to begin the PhD study in connection with the Master study. Thus a prerequisite for acceptance is that the candidate is enrolled in a relevant Master’s programme.

The integrated stipend consists of two parts, A and B. During part A you are enrolled simultaneous in the Master’s programme and in the PhD programme. The stipend consists of two SU-PhD Grants per month (SU=The Danish students’ Grants and Loans Scheme). One SU-PhD grant equals DKK 6090 (2018 level). SU-PhD Grants are paid for a maximum of two years. When the Master’s degree has been obtained, you will be employed for two years as a PhD fellow according to the present collective agreement. Part B has a maximum duration of two years.

It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science will make a decision for allocating the stipend.

For further information about stipends and salary as well as practical issues concerning the application procedure contact Ms. Ruth Klitte, The Faculty of Engineering and Science, email:,  phone: +45 9940 7993.

We wish to reflect the diversity of society and welcome applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.

Appointment and salary as a PhD fellow are according to the Ministry of Finance Circular of November 10, 2015 on the Collective Agreement for Academics in Denmark, Appendix 5, regarding PhD fellows, and with the Ministry of Finance current circular on the employment structure at Danish Universities. Allocation of SU-PhD Grants are according to the Ministerial Order on the State Educational Grant and Loan Scheme part 12, section II. This applies only to integrated PhD stipends.
